At least 10 workers killed in Sikkim hydroelectric project tunnel collapse, with toxic gas hampering rescue.
HYDERABAD: At least 10 workers were killed after an under-construction tunnel at a hydroelectric project collapsed in India’s northeastern state of Sikkim, with naturally occurring toxic gas hampering rescue operations, local media reported on Tuesday.
About 25 workers were inside the tunnel when it collapsed on Monday at the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation’s Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project in Samardung village, Namchi district.
Rescue efforts at the site were hampered by the presence of naturally occurring toxic gas underground as some rescuers experienced dizziness and loss of consciousness, reports said.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said in social media posts that he had informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah about the situation following the disaster.
