Brazil closes probe into X over blocked accounts

Brazil’s Supreme Court ends investigation into Elon Musk’s X platform, citing no evidence of deliberate judicial obstruction, closing a major legal feud.

BRASÍLIA: A top Brazilian judge has ordered the closure of a probe into billionaire Elon Musk’s social media platform X.

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ended the longstanding investigation which had alleged “obstruction of justice” over online disinformation.

The probe was opened in 2024 against Musk and the platform formerly known as Twitter.

It centred on accounts belonging to supporters of right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro.

According to police reports, these blocked accounts were used to spread disinformation and fuel political polarisation.

Moraes had ordered X to suspend the accounts of several Bolsonaro allies accused of spreading disinformation and hate speech.

Prosecutors later requested the case be shelved after their findings.

They found no evidence of deliberate “disobedience” by the platform, only “operational failures” that were later corrected.

Justice Moraes granted the request to close the investigation.

“No evidence was gathered to support the initial theory of the deliberate use of the social network X to attack the authority of the Brazilian Judiciary,” Moraes said in his ruling.

The judge has been a central figure in rulings on social media regulation and Bolsonaro’s legal cases.

Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison for attempting a coup.

Moraes has also repeatedly drawn criticism from US President Donald Trump.

Trump condemned what he called a “witch hunt” against his ally Bolsonaro.

The former US president imposed sanctions and punitive tariffs on Brazil during the dispute.
