At least 11 people are dead and 12 wounded after an armed attack at a soccer field in Guanajuato, a state plagued by gang violence.
SALAMANCA: At least 11 people were killed and 12 more wounded in an armed attack at a soccer field in central Mexico.
The assault occurred on Sunday in a neighbourhood in the town of Salamanca, located in Guanajuato state.
Local authorities confirmed the deaths, with 10 victims pronounced dead at the scene and one later succumbing to injuries in hospital.
Officials have launched an operation to find those responsible for the attack.
The incident follows the discovery of four bags containing human remains in the same town on Saturday night.
Guanajuato is a major industrial hub and popular tourist destination.
It also remains Mexico’s deadliest state due to ongoing gang turf wars, according to official homicide statistics.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said earlier this year that the national homicide rate in 2025 had fallen to its lowest level in a decade.
She attributed the decline to her administration’s national security strategy.
