Macron, Iraqi Kurdish leader call for Syria ceasefire

French President Emmanuel Macron and Iraqi Kurdistan leader Nechirvan Barzani urge an immediate end to fighting in northern Syria, backing talks to integrate Kurdish forces.

PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron and Iraqi Kurdistan President Nechirvan Barzani have called for an immediate de-escalation in Syria.

The leaders made the appeal during a telephone conversation on Saturday, according to the French presidency.

They urged all parties to pursue a permanent ceasefire amid recent fighting in northern Syria.

The clashes involve the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces and government troops.

The SDF controls large parts of Syria’s oil-rich north and northeast.

Damascus authorities are seeking to extend their control over all Syrian territory.

Macron and Barzani expressed support for the immediate resumption of integration talks.

They backed efforts to integrate the SDF into the Syrian state.

Both sides signed a deal last March to merge the semi-autonomous Kurdish administration with the government.

Implementation of that agreement has since largely stalled.
