US President Donald Trump claims a Supreme Court ruling against his tariff powers would be the biggest security threat in history, as legal challenges mount.
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has warned that a potential Supreme Court ruling against his authority to impose tariffs would be the “biggest threat in history” to national security.
The Supreme Court has been examining the legality of his sweeping tariff policy since November 5, though no ruling date has been set.
Trump stated on social media that the United States would be “financially defenseless” if the court ruled against him.
He argued that tariffs have greatly enhanced national security and financial strength.
“We would not be allowed to do what others already do!” he added, posting a photo of French President Emmanuel Macron, who recently threatened China with tariffs over trade imbalances.
Several businesses and Democratic-led states have filed complaints arguing the tariffs are unconstitutional, as the power to impose them rests with Congress.
Last week, retailer Costco became the largest US company to legally challenge the tariffs.
Trump’s approval ratings have slumped to their lowest point since his return to office in January, partly over the cost of living.
US inflation accelerated to 2.8% annually in September.
The issue has caused a rift within his MAGA movement, with former ally Marjorie Taylor Greene saying he failed to focus on affordability.
