Ukrainian and US delegations will meet Friday and Saturday to negotiate an end to the war, as Russia reiterates its maximalist aims.
KYIV: President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukrainian and United States delegations will hold new talks on Friday and Saturday in the US.
The negotiations aim to find a way to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump has been pushing for a quick deal to stop the fighting, with negotiating teams having already proposed draft plans.
“On Friday and Saturday, our team will be in the United States of America; they are already on their way… and the Americans are waiting for them,” Zelensky told reporters.
Trump stated a deal was closer than ever after officials from Ukraine, the US, and Europe agreed on a 20-point plan last week.
However, Russia has not yet reacted to this latest proposal.
Russian leader Vladimir Putin has repeated that Moscow intends to pursue its maximalist military aims in Ukraine.
“We all know Russia’s position. They want to seize the whole of Donbas,” Zelensky said, referring to two eastern regions annexed by Putin in 2022.
Zelensky has repeatedly stated Ukraine is not prepared to cede territory that Russian forces have been unable to capture.
Putin said on Wednesday that Moscow would “certainly” achieve its goals in Ukraine.
