US and European powers urge Iran to cooperate with UN nuclear watchdog

VIENNA: The United States, Britain, France and Germany have submitted a draft resolution urging Iran to “cooperate fully” with the UN nuclear watchdog.

The resolution, seen by AFP, calls on Tehran to provide “access that the agency requests” to its nuclear facilities.

Tensions between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency have escalated since a 12-day war in June involving Israeli and US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

IAEA inspectors have been denied access to key facilities like Fordo and Natanz since the conflict.

The draft stresses it is “imperative” for Iran to comply with its nuclear non-proliferation treaty obligations.

Last week, the IAEA called on Iran to allow verification of its enriched uranium inventories, particularly its sensitive highly enriched uranium stockpile.

The confidential report described this verification as “long overdue”.

The resolution states Iran has failed for five months to provide requested information about its enriched uranium stockpiles and safeguarded nuclear facilities.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi asserted Sunday that Iran has no undeclared uranium enrichment sites.

He claimed “no enrichment” is currently occurring because sites were damaged in the recent war with Israel.

This statement followed US media reports of accelerated construction at a secret underground nuclear site called “Pickaxe Mountain” near Natanz.

Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA after the June conflict, restricting inspector access to bombed sites.

Tehran accused the agency of bias and failing to condemn the attacks.

Iranian officials warned Sunday that adoption of an anti-Iran resolution would trigger a “fundamental review” of relations with the IAEA.

Deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Iran would reconsider its ties with the nuclear watchdog if the resolution passes.

The IAEA board is expected to vote on the draft resolution during its meeting this week.
