Zelensky announces trilateral Ukraine war talks in UAE this week

Ukraine’s president says UAE will host trilateral talks with US and Russian officials, urging Moscow to be “ready for compromises”.

DAVOS: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the United Arab Emirates will host trilateral talks on the war this week.

The talks will involve officials from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia.

Zelensky revealed the plan following his address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Thursday.

“It will be the first trilateral meeting in the Emirates,” he told journalists.

“It will be tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.”

He did not elaborate on the format or confirm if Ukrainian and Russian officials would negotiate directly.

His office did not respond to requests for clarification.

Zelensky stated that the Ukrainian delegation would be led by National Security and Defence Council Secretary Rustem Umerov.

Lieutenant General Andriy Gnatov will also represent the military in the talks.

“It will be a trilateral meeting at the level of negotiators,” Zelensky said.

“We’ll see what the result will be.”

He added that “Russians have to be ready for compromises.”

The UAE has acted as a mediator between Moscow and Kyiv throughout the nearly four-year conflict.

It has been particularly involved in facilitating prisoner exchanges.

Ukrainian and Russian officials have met face-to-face on several occasions since the full-scale invasion.

Those previous talks have failed to end the fighting, which has cost tens of thousands of lives.
