Malaysian contingent focuses on health and acclimatisation for Japan’s cold weather ahead of the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics starting November 15.
KUALA LUMPUR: The national contingent for the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics is now in the final phase of preparation with the main focus placed on health and adaptation to Japan’s cold weather.
Chef de Mission Mohd Yusri Abdul Ghani said all athletes had been reminded to take care of their health and remain focused ahead of their departure to Japan.
“We are scheduled to depart tomorrow and will arrive in Miyoshi to undergo training and acclimatisation for two weeks before the Games begin,” he said when met at the handing over of the Jalur Gemilang to the contingent by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.
The multi-sport event also known as the Summer Deaflympics will take place from November 15 to 26.
Mohd Yusri said that although it was known as the Summer Deaflympics the colder-than-usual weather in Japan required meticulous preparations including bringing along medical and physiotherapy teams.
“The weather there is quite cold and all athletes have undergone health checks at the National Sports Institute and have been confirmed to be in good condition,” he said.
Mohd Yusri said the athletes also displayed high spirits and were not affected by the cold weather factor as some had previously competed abroad including in Brazil.
“Some of our athletes have experience competing in previous editions of the Games under cold conditions so in Japan we will do our best to adapt,” he said.
For the record at the 2022 Deaflympics the Malaysian team brought home two gold medals through Boon Wei Ying and Foo Zu Tung in the women’s doubles badminton event and the women’s team bowling event. – Bernama
