Malaysian para cyclists win four golds at APG despite bike controversy

Malaysia’s para cyclists secure four gold medals in track cycling at the ASEAN Para Games 2025, overcoming a pre-race bike protest and injury.

MALAYSIAN para cyclists delivered a dominant performance in track cycling at the ASEAN Para Games 2025, winning four out of five gold medals on offer.

Mohamad Yusof Hafizi Shaharuddin claimed the first gold in the men’s C1-C2 1km time trial with a time of 1:16.005 seconds.

His victory came despite a pre-race controversy where his bike initially failed a final check following a protest from another country.

“Though it wasn’t cleared initially, I didn’t take it personally and just focused on my ride,” Mohamad Yusof said.

He revealed his left knee struck the aerobar during the race, causing pain, but he persevered to win.

Ahmad Ahlami Mohamad secured Malaysia’s second gold by winning the men’s B 1km time trial in 1:06.252s.

Nur Suraiya Muhamad Zamri then added a third gold in the women’s B 1km time trial, clocking 1:16.203s.

The mixed tandem team sprint provided Malaysia’s fourth gold medal of the day in para cycling.

Malaysia narrowly missed a clean sweep, taking silver and bronze in the men’s C3-C5 1km time trial won by Thailand.

Mohamad Yusof said he would have his injured knee examined by National Sports Institute doctors.

He expressed gratitude for contributing to the medal tally and thanked his supporters. – Bernama
