Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest secure Europa League victories

Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest won in the Europa League, while Celtic suffered a heavy home defeat to Roma on Thursday.

PARIS: Aston Villa secured their eighth consecutive win with a 2-1 victory over Basel in the Europa League on Thursday.

Nottingham Forest also won away at Utrecht, while Celtic were thrashed 3-0 at home by Roma.

Evann Guessand opened the scoring for Villa in Switzerland, but Flavius Daniliuc equalised for Basel before half-time.

Youri Tielemans steered in the winner from outside the area early in the second half for Unai Emery’s side.

“I am happy and we knew before the match the difficulties we were facing today,” Emery told TNT Sports.

Villa are third in the standings on 15 points, trailing leaders Lyon and Midtjylland only on goal difference.

Forest boosted their qualification hopes with a 2-1 win at Utrecht, ending a 30-year wait for a European away victory.

Arnaud Kalimuendo put Forest ahead after the break before Mike van der Hoorn headed an equaliser for the Dutch side.

Igor Jesus netted a late winner to clinch a first away win in Europe for Forest since 1995.

“I’m very pleased with the players and the result, and long may it continue,” said Forest manager Sean Dyche.

Celtic suffered a heavy 3-0 home defeat to Roma under new boss Wilfried Nancy.

An own goal from Liam Scales and a first-half brace from on-loan striker Evan Ferguson sealed the points for the Italian side.

“The reality is we were not able to cope with the intensity,” said Nancy.

Rangers were all but eliminated after a 2-1 loss away to Ferencvaros, leaving them with just one point from six games.

Lyon stayed top with a 2-1 win over Go Ahead Eagles, while Midtjylland beat Genk 1-0. – AFP
