CAF condemns unacceptable behaviour and will take action after chaotic scenes marred the AFCON final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat.
RABAT: The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has stated it will take “appropriate action” against those found guilty following chaotic scenes that marred the Africa Cup of Nations final.
CAF condemned the “unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials” during Sunday’s final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat.
The governing body did not attribute blame specifically to either Senegal or Morocco in its statement.
The incident occurred when referee Jean Jacques Mdala awarded hosts Morocco a penalty deep into added time with the match tied at 0-0.
Most Senegalese players walked off the pitch in protest at the decision.
A group of Senegalese fans also fought with Moroccan security personnel at the other end of the stadium.
Former Liverpool star Sadio Mane, one of the few Senegalese players to remain on the pitch, eventually persuaded his teammates to return.
Morocco’s Brahim Diaz, who had won the penalty, then saw his spot-kick saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Senegal went on to win the final 1-0 with a brilliant goal from Pape Gueye in extra time.
“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organizers,” the statement read.
CAF confirmed it is reviewing all footage and will refer the matter to competent bodies for disciplinary measures.
