FAM executive committee resigns en masse amid governance crisis

All members of the Football Association of Malaysia’s executive committee resign immediately to protect integrity and allow for governance reforms.

THE entire Executive Committee of the Football Association of Malaysia has resigned with immediate effect.

Acting FAM president Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi said the collective resignation for the 2025–2029 term was a unanimous and voluntary decision. He stated the move was taken to safeguard the integrity of FAM amid the current situation drawing public attention.

“This resignation is intended to protect the reputation and interests of FAM as an organisation,” Mohd Yusoff said at a press conference. He added it aimed to reduce the risk of more serious consequences affecting Malaysian football.

The step also aims to uphold principles of good governance and accountability where public confidence must be preserved. Mohd Yusoff said the resignations provide space for FIFA and the AFC to freely assess FAM’s governance affairs.

It ensures any necessary reforms can be implemented without interference or perceived conflicts. The move is also aimed at restoring confidence among supporters, stakeholders and the football community.

FAM Secretary-General Datuk Noor Azman Rahman will continue overseeing day-to-day operations. The body is expected to convene an Electoral Congress to appoint a new Executive Committee.

The crisis began after FIFA confirmed FAM and seven heritage players breached its disciplinary code. Investigations found FAM submitted documents believed falsified to verify player eligibility.

This allowed the players to feature in a 4–0 win over Vietnam in Asian Cup qualifiers last June. FAM was fined approximately RM1.8 million, while each player was fined around RM11,000 and suspended for 12 months.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport recently allowed a Stay of Execution for the seven players. This followed FIFA’s Appeal Committee rejecting appeals previously lodged by FAM and the players.
