Leverkusen climb to third in Bundesliga with comeback win at Leipzig

Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to beat RB Leipzig 3-1, moving into third place in the Bundesliga table with goals from Terrier, Schick and Culbreath.

LEIPZIG: Bayer Leverkusen moved into third place in the Bundesliga with a 3-1 comeback victory away to RB Leipzig on Saturday.

Xaver Schlager gave the hosts the lead after 35 minutes at the Red Bull Arena.

Leverkusen struck back with two goals in four minutes just before halftime.

Martin Terrier equalised with a superb glancing header in the 40th minute.

Patrik Schick then put Leverkusen ahead, blasting into the roof of the net after a Nathan Tella pass.

Teenage winger Montrell Culbreath sealed the win deep into stoppage time on his top-flight debut.

“It was a really top match. It could’ve finished 4-4,” Leverkusen captain Robert Andrich said.

“You can see how we’re developing as a team.”

The defeat sends Leipzig down to fourth place, three points behind second-placed Borussia Dortmund.

Earlier, Stuttgart were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Hoffenheim.

Stuttgart captain Atakan Karazor said his side were the better team but “just couldn’t get it over the line”.

Eintracht Frankfurt drew 1-1 away at Hamburg, with Hugo Larsson cancelling out Albert Sambi Lokonga’s opener.

Frankfurt have conceded a league-high 30 goals this season.

Union Berlin beat 10-man Cologne 1-0 thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Andras Schaefer.

Freiburg won a seven-goal thriller 4-3 against Wolfsburg, despite a hat-trick from home striker Dzenan Pejcinovic.

Augsburg and Werder Bremen played out a scoreless draw. – AFP
