Sabah FC coach Martin Stano is inspired by fans’ “win or die trying” spirit as his team prepares for a packed home stadium in the decisive Challenge Cup final leg

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah FC are determined to end a seven-year trophy drought, inspired by their fans’ “win or die trying” attitude ahead of the 2026 Challenge Cup final.

Head coach Martin Stano enthusiastically embraced the sentiment echoing on social media. “We will do it,” he declared at a pre-match press conference.

Over 11,000 tickets have been sold for the second leg against Penang FC at Likas Stadium. Stano said this overwhelming support is a massive motivation for his squad.

“We want to make the fans part of this journey,” he stated. The first leg in Penang ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

Stano emphasised the team’s determination to capitalise on home advantage to secure the title. He said the squad is in a much stronger physical position than during the first leg.

“We now have an almost full team with many players coming back ready for the game,” the coach explained. He added this improved situation makes the team stronger.

Tactically, Stano stressed the need for consistency rather than radical changes. The focus is on tweaking minor details and ensuring player comfort under pressure.

He acknowledged a previous heavy loss in an FA Cup final against Johor Darul Ta’zim. Stano views the clash with Penang FC as a more balanced opportunity for silverware.

The coach called for a packed stadium to create an intimidating atmosphere. He recalled the intense environment during the away leg in Penang.

“For us, this is a big opportunity to win a title,” Stano added. He said the fans are waiting for something big and need to back the team.

Meanwhile, Penang FC head coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail said the home crowd would not dampen his squad’s spirit. He acknowledged the advantage lies with the experienced hosts.

The former national striker stressed his players are highly motivated and ready to provide a fierce challenge. His main focus is improving his team’s finishing after the first leg.

“In terms of tactics, there are not many changes,” Wan Rohaimi stated. He said players need maturity to absorb early pressure.

Leading a team in a final for the first time, the coach expressed pride in his players’ achievements. He hopes both teams deliver an entertaining match befitting a final.
