Tottenham captain Romero apologises as crisis deepens

Spurs captain Cristian Romero apologises to fans after latest defeat and appears to criticise the club’s hierarchy for a lack of public support.

LONDON: Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero (pic) has apologised to fans as the club’s crisis deepens following a 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth.

The loss leaves Spurs with just two wins from their last 12 Premier League matches, languishing in 14th place and increasing pressure on manager Thomas Frank.

In a social media post, the Argentine defender said the players were responsible for their plight and vowed to try and turn the situation around.

Romero also appeared to take a swipe at the club’s hierarchy, suggesting they should be offering more public support during difficult times.

“At times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they don’t – as has been happening for several years now,” Romero wrote on Instagram.

“They only show up when things are going well.”

The 27-year-old later deleted the initial post but replaced it with a similar message, omitting a comment about “a few lies” but maintaining the criticism.

Manager Thomas Frank is struggling in his first season after arriving from Brentford, with fans seen arguing with players after the latest defeat.

Romero previously defended former manager Ange Postecoglou in a similar post last year, highlighting “many obstacles” at the club.

Postecoglou was sacked despite winning the Europa League last season to end Tottenham’s 17-year trophy drought.

The club’s leadership has seen recent changes, with Daniel Levy leaving as chairman in September and Vinai Venkatesham appointed chief executive in April.

Majority owners ENIC, run by the Lewis family trust, have rarely made public statements regarding the team’s performances.
