National Sports Council is tracking Songkhla’s flood situation, prioritising athlete safety for the upcoming 2025 Thailand SEA Games.
THE National Sports Council (NSC) is closely monitoring the flood situation in Songkhla, which could affect several venues at the 2025 Thailand SEA Games scheduled for December 9-20.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh confirmed a special monitoring team has been deployed to assess the level of damage and risk to athletes.
She said the NSC is in close contact with the Games Secretariat in Thailand to obtain the latest developments regarding affected locations.
“We have accurate information from people on the ground, because the monitoring team was sent immediately,” she told a media conference.
Yeoh reiterated that the safety of national athletes and officials remained the ministry’s top priority.
She has also contacted the Foreign Ministry regarding the safety issue and will continue to seek their views before the contingent’s departure.
“For now, give us some time to contact the Games Secretariat,” she said.
She explained that Songkhla is designated only for combat sports, with the reported affected location being for football.
Yeoh urged patience, noting that Thailand is currently managing disaster preparations and rescue works.
“We should not put too much pressure on them.
“Let them deal with their rescue operations first,” she said.
Asked if the national contingent will travel to Songkhla by bus, Yeoh said the plan will be changed if necessary for athlete safety.
“If we cannot go there by bus, we will find another way,” she said.
Media reports indicated that the Tinsulanonda Stadium, the men’s football venue for Group B involving Malaysia, Vietnam and Laos, was hit by floods.
There is a possibility the venue might be moved to Bangkok.
