Malaysia’s top seed Sivasangari storms into the Australian Open final, setting up a title clash and ending a 13-month trophy drought

KUALA LUMPUR: National squash star S. Sivasangari is one victory away from ending a 13-month title drought after powering into the final of the Australian Open 2026.

The top seed needed 50 minutes to defeat Belgian fourth seed Nele Gilis 11-8, 13-11, 11-4 in today’s semi-final at Brisbane’s South Bank Piazza.

The win levelled the world number six’s head-to-head record with Gilis at four matches apiece. Sivasangari will now compete for the Professional Squash Association gold-level title in tomorrow’s final.

She will face either second seed Tinne Gilis of Belgium or seventh seed Marina Stefanoni of the United States. Her last tournament victory came at the Cincinnati Gaynor Cup in February 2025.

On that occasion, she defeated Egypt’s Amanda Sobhy 11-7, 6-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-4 to claim the title.
