AFTER a decade of silence, Rockstar Games has released the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), the next entry in the 26-year-old controversial crime franchise.
Though Rockstar planned to release the trailer on Dec 5, the company expedited it after the trailer leaked on social media.
In the 90-second-long trailer, GTA6 confirms that players will be returning to Vice City in the fictional state of Leonida, which is Rockstar’s version of Florida.
The trailer features mainly various location shots that establish the vibe of Leonida, from the beach culture to the crazy people that inhabit it, true to the real world of Florida.
It also confirms that the game’s story will be focused on two criminals, Jason and Lucia, which might be Rockstar’s attempt at their own version of the real-world criminal couple, Bonnie and Clyde.
Lucia is also Grand Theft Auto’s first female protagonist.
Some of these were somewhat revealed back in 2022, when a large portion of gameplay footage was leaked last year, including the game having two playable characters of different genders and the location, which was the main setting of 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
The last game in the franchise was Grand Theft Auto V (GTAV) in 2013, which featured three playable main characters.
GTAV is now among the best-selling video games of all time, having sold over 190 million copies as of last month, thanks to its online multiplayer feature, which is still supported by Rockstar.
Will GTA6 reach or even beat those numbers? Based on how the trailer surpassed 100 million views on YouTube, breaking the record for most views in 24 hours, GTA6 looks primed to surpass GTAV.
According to Rockstar’s press release, GTA6 will arrive for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, but there was no mention of a PC release.
This does not mean PC players will never get the game, but rather GTA6 will come out at a later date.
For context, GTAV released on the PC almost one-and-a-half years after it first came out on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
