BANGKOK: Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced that Indonesia is expressing interest in procuring 2 million metric tonnes of Thai rice in the upcoming year.
“Indonesia, on Monday, sent a letter formally requesting to purchase 2 million metric tonnes of Thai rice,” he told reporters at a press conference after the cabinet meeting today.
Meanwhile, Thai government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke said Indonesia has indicated interest in importing one million metric tonnes of Thai rice by the end of this year to enhance its food security. He said logistical constraints have made it difficult to fulfil this request within the specified timeframe.
“Indonesia wants to purchase a total of 2 million metric tonnes next year.,” he said.
Thailand, the world’s second-largest rice exporter, aims to export 8 million metric tonnes this year, an increase from its previous target.
Statistics showed Thailand exported 6.9 million metric tonnes of rice, an increase of 11.4 per cent year-on-year, from January to October this year. -Bernama
