Sabah water crisis caused by sluice valve interference, says MP

Papar MP Armizan says interference with sluice valves at JANS booster pumps diverted water, worsening the supply crisis in Mukim Kinarut and Kawang.

KOTA KINABALU: Interference with sluice valves at two booster pumps has caused a critical water supply disruption in parts of Papar, Sabah.

Papar Member of Parliament Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the interference at Sabah State Water Department (JANS) facilities diverted water away from Mukim Kinarut and Kawang.

“Based on the findings of a special JANS task force, the interference further reduced the available water supply to areas already under rationing,” he said in a statement.

Armizan, who is also the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, said he lodged a police report over the incident.

He said the report was to request an investigation into actions involving “elements of mischief and sabotage against public infrastructure”.

“Although JANS has committed to conducting an internal investigation, I am of the view that it must also be investigated concurrently by the police,” he added.

With the Chief Minister’s agreement, Armizan requested a special meeting chaired by the State Secretary to address the crisis.

Following the meeting, immediate steps include implementing a cross-connection between water treatment plant pipelines.

This will allow treated water to be supplied directly to the main tank serving the affected areas.

Connection work for this emergency measure began immediately.
