Spurs boss Thomas Frank insists the club is making progress with ‘small steps’ and new signings, despite a poor run of form and fan frustration.
LONDON: Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank believes his team is making progress with “small steps” despite a difficult run of results.
Frank expressed delight at the arrival of “unbelievable” midfielder Conor Gallagher, signed for a reported £34.7 million during the January transfer window.
The Danish coach received more jeers from fans after Spurs’ 2-1 FA Cup loss to Aston Villa, their seventh defeat in 13 matches.
The club’s hierarchy appears to be standing by Frank, who also hired John Heitinga as a new assistant coach this week.
Tottenham sit 14th in the Premier League ahead of hosting West Ham, but Frank insisted “good signs” were evident.
“I’m very aware of how this football world works,” Frank said. “I know that we haven’t got enough of the result we want.”
He pointed to positive elements in recent performances, including strong second-half showings against Bournemouth and Villa.
Frank highlighted improvements in defence and set-pieces, but said the focus is now on improving the team’s offensive output.
The manager believes all the incremental changes, including new signings and coaching staff, mean “everything is going forward”.
He now hopes for a “top performance and a win” against West Ham on Saturday.
Frank will hope Gallagher can provide an immediate boost following injuries to Rodrigo Bentancur and Richarlison.
Gallagher struggled for starts at Atletico Madrid but impressed in his final season at Chelsea with seven goals and nine assists.
“How he ended his last year in Chelsea, I think he was at times unplayable,” Frank said of his new signing.
“That’s the Conor Gallagher I’m thinking can step straight into this team and help us straight away.” – AFP
