A frustrated Malaysian university student recently took to Threads to vent about the emotional and financial strain of being repeatedly asked for money by her own mother.
The daughter, who is preparing to return to university soon, shared that she has managed to save some money. However, her mother continues to pressure her for more.
In screenshots of their conversation, the mother can be seen telling her daughter not to be “calculative” when she refuses to give more money.
“Don’t be so calculate. Transfer more than RM5 or RM10. This is for your sibling’s school expenses also.”
When the daughter showed her bank balance to prove she had limited funds, her mother replied:
“Don’t tell me you will be calculative with your own mother.”
The situation worsened when the mother resorted to body-shaming to pressure her daughter into giving more money.
“I love my mom, but she even body-shamed me.”
The daughter explained how she tried to set a limit, saying she would have no money left to eat if she kept giving.
“I told her that if I give her money, I won’t have money to eat. She replied, ‘It’s okay to be a bit skinnier.’ I’m a chubby girl. Hearing my mom say that made me give up and just give in.”
The student also revealed deeper financial issues within her family. Although her father is working, most of his income goes toward paying off mounting debts.
According to her, her mother continues to live beyond their means—buying branded items on instalment plans and taking on more debt through various platforms.
“My dad is working, but he’s drowning in debt. My mom lives a ‘rich lifestyle’, buying branded items on credit. Most of my dad’s salary goes into paying debts, and sometimes I’m the one who has to fork out money to settle them.”
