BESS key to Malaysia’s energy security

MP P. Prabakaran says Battery energy storage systems (BESS) development in stages at strategic locations is crucial for grid stability and reducing fossil fuel reliance.

KUALA LUMPUR: The development of battery energy storage systems (BESS) should be implemented in stages at strategic locations across Malaysia.

Batu MP P. Prabakaran told the Dewan Rakyat these locations should include areas at risk of supply disruption and major industrial zones.

He said BESS will become a vital component for national energy security and sustainability.

It will also help reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels, he added during the debate on the motion of thanks for the royal address.

Prabakaran warned that Malaysia cannot rely solely on traditional power generation during the rapid shift to renewable energy.

“A strong and resilient energy storage system is essential for support,” he said.

BESS allows surplus solar and wind energy to be stored for use during peak demand periods.

The technology also plays a key role in stabilising the national electricity grid.

The MP proposed the government create clear regulations and initiatives to encourage investment in energy storage.

He also called for developing local expertise to reduce total dependence on foreign technology.

Prabakaran highlighted that BESS development opens new economic opportunities through high-skilled job creation.

It also facilitates technology transfer, aligning with national low-carbon economy aspirations.

“BESS is not merely a technical facility, but a strategic investment to safeguard energy security and the future of the nation,” he said.
