Works ministry committed to fixing delayed projects

Deputy minister says one-third of Works Ministry projects are behind schedule, aims to reduce delays and speed up completion.

SEREMBAN: The Works Ministry is committed to expediting the implementation of delayed development projects nationwide to ensure they are completed on schedule or ahead of schedule.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan said about one-third of projects under the ministry are currently behind schedule, one-third are progressing on schedule, while the remaining one-third have been completed ahead of schedule.

“My goal is to reduce the number of delayed projects as much as possible so that they move into the on-schedule category, while projects that are on schedule can be completed ahead of time,” he said here today.

He added that the ministry has also reminded all its officers that while they may be overseeing hundreds or even thousands of projects at any one time, each project is of great importance to the public.

“Officers may be handling dozens or even hundreds of projects, but for the public there is only one project they are waiting for. That is why they ask why it is delayed or has yet to begin,” he said.

In this regard, Ahmad said the ministry is focusing on resolving project delays through a series of engagement sessions with senior ministry officials and the Public Works Department (JKR), including those in Sarawak and Sabah.

He said that besides projects currently under implementation, the ministry is also paying close attention to those at the planning stage, which often face delays due to issues such as land acquisition and utility relocation.

“We should not look for excuses. We must look for solutions so that projects at the planning stage can be expedited and those under construction can be completed faster,” he said.

He stressed that the ministry remains committed to ensuring all projects are completed according to schedule, noting that implementation timelines vary depending on the scope and stage of each project.
