‘Saya Anak Malaysia’ moments that made Malaysians proud abroad

From Proton cars to nasi lemak and Secret Recipe, Malaysians share proud moments of spotting homegrown brands overseas

PATRIOTISM doesn’t only show up during Merdeka month. Sometimes, it hits unexpectedly while you’re thousands of kilometres from home.

Malaysian Reddit users recently shared their proud “Saya Anak Malaysia” moments after spotting familiar sights overseas, from cars and food to homegrown brands thriving abroad.

One user recalled spotting a Proton Satria in Australia, while another said she took an Uber in Guyana, only to realise it was a Proton X50. “So proud!” she wrote.

Others pointed out Malaysian brands quietly making waves internationally. A Redditor shared that New Zealand-based car service chain Oil Changers uses Petronas lubricants, calling it “pretty cool.”

Food, unsurprisingly, featured heavily. A Malaysian American noted that Papparich is well known in North America and often doubles as a gathering spot for Malaysians craving a taste of home.

Another Penangite recalled queuing for a “good enough” prawn noodle at a kopitiam on Manhattan’s East Broadway, while one user shared a 2009 memory of being taken to Secret Recipe in Manila — where a Filipino friend declared mee goreng mamak his favourite noodle dish.

Perhaps most surprising was the discovery of a Malaysian home appliance brand quietly succeeding in the UK.

“You’ve probably heard of it, seen it, and might even own some of its appliances. The name sounds very Angmoh, but it’s actually Malaysian — Russell Taylors,” the user said.
