Three arrests made in Mexican football pitch massacre that killed 11

Three suspects arrested over the armed attack at a football game in Guanajuato that left 11 dead, with security guards linked to a cartel targeted.

MEXICO CITY: Three people have been arrested over an armed attack on a football match in central Mexico that killed 11 people and injured a dozen others.

Officials announced the arrests on Wednesday following the Sunday afternoon attack near Salamanca in Guanajuato state.

The Guanajuato Security Secretariat stated the arrests “resulted from various coordinated and targeted operations.”

The agency did not release the suspects’ identities or the specific charges, citing the confidential nature of the investigation.

Five of the victims were unarmed security guards working at the football pitch.

A preliminary investigation indicates the guards were targeted because their employer was linked to the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

The suspected attackers are believed to belong to the rival Santa Rosa de Lima cartel, which is based in Guanajuato.

The amateur football game, largely attended by families, was concluding when armed men stormed the grounds.
