Melaka to hold talks on voluntary Year One entry for six-year-olds

Melaka government and Education Department will engage stakeholders on voluntary Year One entry for six-year-olds starting next year.

MELAKA: The state government and the Melaka Education Department will conduct engagement sessions with stakeholders on the voluntary admission of six-year-olds into Year One starting next year.

State Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Rahmad Mariman said preparations must begin early despite the policy not being compulsory.

He stated that some parents may want their children to start school earlier, and the authorities need to be ready to accommodate them.

“Personally, I agree with this approach as children can progress faster and complete their education sooner,” Rahmad told reporters after an event at SK Bendahara Seri Maharaja in Kandang.

He noted that some children have already received early education from as young as four years old.

The policy was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the launch of the National Education Blueprint 2026-2035 on Jan 20.

It allows six-year-old children to enter Year One from next year, based on parental choice and not as a mandatory requirement.
