‘Better than ending my life’: M’sians vent on working in S’pore

Reddit users share mixed experiences of working in Singapore, with some citing stress and others defending Singaporean colleagues

MALAYSIANS working in Singapore have taken to Reddit to vent their frustrations, with some saying they can no longer tolerate their workplace experiences across the border.

One user remarked that Malaysians who have spent more than a decade working in Singapore would have developed “thick skin” after enduring pressure and humiliation.

Another, claiming to be a medical specialist, shared a deeply personal account of working in Singapore for 15 years, alleging sustained workplace targeting and performance-related pressure.

“I ended my career by leaving. Better than ending my life,” the user wrote.

Others echoed similar experiences. One Redditor said he was allegedly targeted just two months into his job, prompting him to resign immediately despite leaving with a damaged reputation.

However, not all commenters shared the same sentiment. Several users said their experiences with Singaporeans were largely positive, noting that workplace culture often depends on the individuals involved.

“Some are really nice and dislike the same things you do, but others can be insufferable,” one user said.

Interestingly, a recurring theme emerged pointing not at Singaporeans, but at Malaysians who have obtained permanent residency there.

Some claimed these individuals were more demanding and competitive than their Singaporean counterparts.

“It’s the Malaysians who got PR that I dreaded working with,” one user commented, with another adding that Malaysian PRs could be “more kiasu than the kiasu Singaporean”.

Still, others urged balance, suggesting workplace issues may stem from specific environments rather than nationality.

One user responded, “I work with many Singaporeans daily. Great people. Maybe it’s just your circle or workplace.”
