Tottenham manager Thomas Frank says Cristian Romero’s social media comments have been handled internally, refusing to confirm if the defender was disciplined.

TOTTENHAM Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has confirmed Cristian Romero’s recent social media outburst has been “dealt with internally”. The Spurs captain made headlines after criticising the club’s transfer policy and revealing he played while ill.

Frank refused to confirm whether the defender had been fined or faced other disciplinary action. He was speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Premier League trip to face Manchester United on Saturday.

Romero posted on Instagram shortly after the transfer window closed on Monday. He called it “disgraceful” that the squad was left with only 11 fit players and revealed he played with an illness in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

His comments resonated with many fans frustrated by the club’s lack of signings since Conor Gallagher’s arrival on January 14. Spurs have lost nine players to injuries since the start of 2026.

“If you want to know what he meant, you of course need to ask him,” Frank said when asked about the post. “That is the right way to take that question.”

The manager described Romero as a “very passionate character and player” who wants to win. “Sometimes when you are like that, sometimes there can be an outburst, which happened this time,” Frank added.

He declined to give specifics on any internal punishment. “There is a lot of ways of doing things,” Frank stated. “Cuti has been very good for us this season and past seasons.”

Frank did offer his personal view on the matter. “I wouldn’t have done it,” he said, referring to the social media post. “That’s my message.”

He suggested the intent behind the post could be misinterpreted. “The beauty of written text is that you can read a lot into it,” Frank noted.

Romero also expressed his frustration on social media following a 3-2 loss to Bournemouth on January 7. Frank reiterated that only Romero truly knew the purpose behind his latest comments.

“It shows that Cuti is extremely passionate,” the manager concluded. “He wants to do everything he can together with his team-mates to achieve great things.”
