Kane, Diaz fire Bayern into German Cup semi-finals

Bayern Munich reach the German Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2020 with a 2-0 win over RB Leipzig, thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Luis Diaz

HARRY Kane and Luis Diaz scored second-half goals as Bayern Munich defeated RB Leipzig 2-0 to advance to the German Cup semi-finals.

The victory marks Bayern’s first appearance in the last four of the competition since 2020, ending a five-year quarter-final drought for the record 20-time winners.

Kane broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute after Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt fouled Josip Stanisic.

The England captain’s strike was his 39th goal in all competitions this season and his fifth against Leipzig.

Diaz doubled the lead just four minutes later, finishing off a counter-attack orchestrated by Michael Olise.

The goal was Diaz’s fifth in his past three matches for the Bavarian giants.

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany praised Kane’s relentless contribution. “I don’t know if he was born like that, but he has talent and he worked hard to improve it. And we’re enjoying these moments with Harry,” Kompany said.

Leipzig had started brightly and thought they had taken an early lead through Christoph Baumgartner.

His acrobatic fourth-minute effort was ruled out for a narrow offside, however.

The visitors continued to press and Vandevoordt produced a stunning save to deny Serge Gnabry just before the hour mark.

Leipzig captain David Raum lamented his side’s misfortune in defeat. “When you want to win here you need a bit of the luck of the game and maybe a decision or two from the referee, but that luck wasn’t on our side today,” Raum told ARD.

“We conceded two dumb goals – I think there was more in it for us.”

Bayern join holders Stuttgart, Bayer Leverkusen and Freiburg in the semi-final draw.

The final will be held at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on May 23.
