BORNEO’S rich heritage is taking the main focus at this year’s Miss Universe stage. Miss Universe Malaysia 2025 Chloe Lim will wear the national costume, “The Majestic of Anjung Serimpak”, at the upcoming 74th Miss Universe competition in Thailand.
Embodying the history of the Bajau Sama community in Sabah, the costume showcases the ethnic group’s deep-rooted connection to the sea and their heritage as skilled seafarers.
Its design is reflective of this, featuring a brass Serimpak headdress shaped like a sailing vessel, accompanied by Selisir fabric hand-embroidered by Bajau Sama artisans. The look is completed with traditional elements such as the Siupu belt and Duang Sama accessories.
This marks the first for a Bajau-inspired costume to be worn by a Malaysian delegate on the Miss Universe stage.
“I feel deeply honoured to wear this costume, which truly represents the roots of our people and the beauty of Malaysia’s creativity and multicultural spirit. It is a reminder to always embrace our authentic selves, and the genuine diversity that defines who we are as Malaysians,” said Lim.
The costume was designed by Mell Sulaiman, winner of the Malaysia Top National Costume Designer competition 2025.
“Every year, the national costume gives us a chance to remind the world of Malaysia’s beauty and diversity. We are honoured to share that story through Chloe, who has been working tirelessly in preparation for the international competition,” said Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation National director Charissa Chong.
Lim was crowned Miss Universe Malaysia 2025, defeating 15 other contestants at the pageant’s gala finals in September. The 27-year-old Kuala Lumpur native will represent the country on the global stage this November.
