Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visits Malaysia for ASEAN Summit and bilateral talks to strengthen trade and regional cooperation.

KUALA LUMPUR: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will undertake a working visit to Malaysia from October 25 to 28 at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

This marks Mark Carney’s first official visit to Malaysia since assuming office in March 2025.

Mark Carney will be accompanied by his spouse Diana Fox Carney along with the Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development and senior government officials.

He will attend the Opening Ceremony of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits and the Plenary Session on October 26.

Carney is invited to deliver remarks on “The Future Direction of ASEAN-Canada Dialogue Relations” during the plenary session.

He is also scheduled to participate in a moderated discussion at the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit organised by the ASEAN Business Advisory Council of Malaysia.

Both leaders are expected to hold a bilateral meeting focusing on strengthening relations and charting new directions for future collaboration.

Discussions will cover trade and investment, Halal cooperation, energy cooperation, cybersecurity, and people-to-people connectivity.

Carney and his spouse are invited to attend a Gala Dinner hosted by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his spouse Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail that evening.

Total trade between Malaysia and Canada amounted to RM11.32 billion in 2024, marking a 33.6% increase from the previous year.

This positive momentum continued into the first quarter of 2025 with total trade reaching RM3.26 billion, a 38.7% increase compared with the same period in 2024.

The visit is poised to build on this upward trajectory by expanding and diversifying economic cooperation between the two dynamic partners.

The visit reflects the long-standing and strategic partnership between Malaysia and Canada based on mutual respect and shared prosperity.

Leaders of ASEAN Member States, Timor Leste and external partners will convene in Kuala Lumpur for the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits.

The summit will advance regional cooperation and discuss international issues under Malaysia’s Chairmanship themed “Inclusivity and Sustainability”. – Bernama
