Deputy Minister calls on mosques nationwide to install rooftop solar panels under new programme, highlighting long-term savings and national energy goals.
KUALA LUMPUR: Mosques across the country are being encouraged to install rooftop solar panels under a new government programme to support national renewable energy targets.
Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad (pic) said the Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (ATAP) is ideal for mosques with high monthly electricity bills.
He explained that while no direct subsidy is offered, the long-term savings make solar a prudent investment for religious premises.
“The cost of solar installation starts from between RM60,000 and RM70,000, and the savings reach up to 80%,” he said in Parliament.
“If the bill is RM1,000, it means we only need to pay RM200 per month.”
Abdul Rahman was responding to a question about promoting renewable energy culture through mosques and schools.
He emphasised that ATAP is vital for increasing national renewable energy capacity to 35% by 2030.
The government also aims for 70% of electricity generation to come from renewable sources by 2050.
On mandating renewable energy in new mosque and school construction, he said this falls under state governments and the Education Ministry.
His ministry remains ready to assist any institution keen on installing solar panels and energy storage systems.
Engagement sessions with communities, including imams and village heads, will be held to explain the national energy transition roadmap.
The government currently has no plans for a specific solar installation programme for the B40 income group.
Abdul Rahman noted that solar installations are typically viable for premises with monthly bills exceeding RM300.
“Normally, this solar panel is installed when the electricity bill exceeds RM300,” he stated.
“It’s not possible for those in the B40 group to have bills exceeding RM300 per month.”
Efforts to mainstream renewable energy include the Malaysian Energy Literacy Programme (MELP).
This programme targets schools, universities, and the public through collaboration with various stakeholders.
