Dewan Rakyat passes RM7.94 billion supplementary budget

Malaysia’s lower house approves a RM7.94 billion supplementary supply bill for 2025, with allocations for key ministries and a government loan for a highway project.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat has approved the Supplementary Supply (2025) Bill 2026, authorising an additional RM7.94 billion in expenditure for the year 2025.

The bill was passed via a majority voice vote following a debate by MPs.

Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan stated that the 2025 supplementary sum is notably lower than previous years, which saw RM70 billion in 2022, RM30 billion in 2023, and RM20 billion in 2024.

“The government will continue to implement prudent and disciplined fiscal management,” he said during the winding-up debate.

The additional allocation includes RM1.39 billion for the Treasury and RM5.29 billion for statutory funds.

It also provides RM993.94 million for the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and RM257.59 million for the Higher Education Ministry.

Separately, Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi announced a RM135 million government support loan for the East Klang Valley Expressway (EKVE) concessionaire.

He said the Cabinet approved the loan in October 2023 to ensure the project’s completion, as physical progress had exceeded 90%.

“The GSL assistance will be used to cover part of the construction costs to complete the highway,” Nanta Linggi explained during the committee-stage session.

He assured that the cost increase would not lead to higher toll rates or an extension of the concession period.

The Dewan Rakyat sitting is scheduled to resume on Monday.
