Women’s Nations League: Spain to defend title against Germany

Spain will defend their women’s UEFA Nations League title against Germany after both teams won their semi-final ties.

SPAIN will defend their women’s UEFA Nations League title against Germany after both teams progressed through their semi-final ties.

Two-time Ballon D’Or winner Alexia Putellas scored again on Tuesday to secure Spain’s place in the final.

World champions Spain followed their 4-0 first-leg victory over Sweden with a 1-0 win in Gothenburg for a 5-0 aggregate triumph.

Germany drew their second leg 2-2 with France in Caen but advanced 3-2 on aggregate.

The two-legged final will be played on November 28 and December 2.

The second leg will be hosted at Atletico Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano.

“We’ve never had the opportunity to play at the Metropolitano,” Putellas said.

“Hopefully the fans will be the 12th player and we can win another title.”

Putellas scored in the 74th minute with a classy first-time finish into the top corner.

Claudia Pina provided the assist after being teed up by Aitana Bonmati.

France started quickly in Caen with an early Melvine Malard header.

Nicole Anyomi equalised for Germany in the 12th minute with a powerful shot into the top-left corner.

Winger Klara Buehl put Germany ahead on the night with a 50th-minute left-footed strike.

Clara Mateo’s late header from a Kadidiatou Diani cross levelled the match for France.

Germany held on despite late pressure to secure their place in the final. – AFP
