Trans-Borneo Railway feasibility study due mid-year

The final report on the Trans-Borneo Railway’s feasibility is expected by mid-year, with the decades-long project seen as a vital foundation for regional development.

KUALA LUMPUR: The final feasibility report for the proposed Trans-Borneo Railway is expected to be completed by the middle of this year.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated that additional engagement sessions with stakeholders in Sabah and Sarawak are currently underway to inform the study.

He emphasised that if implemented, the massive cross-Borneo rail project would likely take decades to be fully realised.

Loke stressed the importance of establishing a long-term plan now to serve as the foundational blueprint for the ambitious infrastructure endeavour.

“I have just received a preliminary briefing regarding the interim feasibility report for the Trans-Borneo Railway, and I have advised the consultants to take into account the economic plans of the Sarawak and Sabah state governments,” Loke said in a Facebook post.

He explained that this alignment with state economic plans is crucial to ensure the proposed rail routes act as a true catalyst for regional development.

“As the Transport Minister under the MADANI framework, I am committed to seeing balanced development within the Malaysian Federation,” he added.

The project aims to create a major railway link connecting the two East Malaysian states across Borneo island.
