Egypt’s petroleum minister says the country can help transport Saudi oil to the Mediterranean using its Sumed pipeline amid regional shipping disruptions.
CAIRO: Egypt has offered to help transport Saudi oil to the Mediterranean Sea. Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi (pic) made the announcement as tankers face blockages in the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf infrastructure is attacked.
Egypt currently imports crude from Saudi Aramco via the Red Sea port of Yanbu. “This enables us not just to provide for Egypt, but to receive crude from Saudi Arabia, and transfer it through Egypt’s Sumed port and pipeline to the Mediterranean,” Badawi said during a cabinet press conference.
The Sumed pipeline is a key strategic asset connecting the Red Sea to the Mediterranean. It runs from Ain Sokhna, south of the Suez Canal, to a terminal west of Alexandria.
