Sultan of Selangor inaugurates a 120-metre flagpole, the tallest in Southeast Asia, at Dataran Selangor, a new RM8.5 million landmark in Shah Alam

SHAH ALAM: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, today inaugurated Southeast Asia’s tallest flagpole at the new Dataran Selangor landmark.

His Royal Highness witnessed the flag-hoisting ceremony at the 120-metre structure, located at Kelab Shah Alam in Section 13.

The arrival of Sultan Sharafuddin was welcomed by the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah.

Also present were Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari and State Secretary Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin.

The Ruler decreed that the Jalur Gemilang be flown at the flagpole for 10 days during annual National Day celebrations.

He stated this would symbolise patriotism and national unity between Selangor and other Malaysian states.

Sultan Sharafuddin said he conceived the flagpole as a symbol of unity for Selangor’s people.

He added it was intended to foster respect for the flag and strengthen love for the state.

“I chose March 8, 2026, as the date for the inauguration of this flagpole, in conjunction with the birthday of my late father, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj,” he said.

The Ruler noted his late father was pivotal in developing Shah Alam and proclaiming it the state capital in 1978.

A 15 by 30 metre flag weighing about 50 kilogrammes was hoisted by 40 Royal Malaysian Navy personnel.

The ceremony was led by Petty Officer PWP Samsul Hashim.

Sultan Sharafuddin also witnessed the presentation of a Malaysia Book of Records certificate.

The certificate recognises the flagpole as the tallest in Southeast Asia and was received by Ahmad Fadzli.

This surpasses the previous record held by the 99.4-metre Ibu Pertiwi Flagpole in Kuching, Sarawak.

The Kuching flagpole received its Malaysia Book of Records recognition in 2024.

Construction was inspired by a decree from Sultan Sharafuddin on December 1, 2023.

The Ruler had expressed his wish for a tall, iconic flagpole as a landmark symbol of pride for Selangor.

Dataran Selangor adopts the Bunga Tanjung Kelopak Sembilan motif representing the state’s nine districts.

Project construction began on September 10, 2024 and was completed on March 7, 2026.

It finished six days ahead of schedule at a total cost of RM8.5 million.
