ALOR SETAR: A total of 31 individuals, including two women, were arrested in âOp Soga VIIIâ, which was launched to curb gambling activities, from June 12 until today, said Kedah police chief, Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat.
He said that all the individuals, aged between 17 and 55, were arrested for engaging in football betting activities in conjunction with the Euro 2020 Championship, which lasted for a month.
âDuring the operations, the police have conducted 27 raids statewide and arrested 29 men and two women. Apart from that, police also seized 40 mobile phones, four sets of computers, three laptops, one tablet, two modems and cash amounting to RM33,326.
âPolice investigation and intelligence estimate that the total value of the betting is RM2 million. Betting was conducted using WhatsApp, WeChat, Wish and PlayerUnknownâs Battlegrounds (PUBG) applications, as well as several other websites,â he said in a statement today.
He said the investigation was carried out under Section 6 (3) of the Betting Act 1953, which carries maximum imprisonment not exceeding five years and a fine of up to RM200,000, upon conviction.
Police will continue to crack down on gambling activities in the state, and call on the public to channel information related to the matter at 04-732 6999 or 04-774 1403, he said. â Bernama
