Tawau Hospital boosts capacity with new RM223 million block

Tawau Hospital’s new RM223 million block adds 154 beds as part of its upgrade to a Category 1 State Hospital by 2030, enhancing east Sabah healthcare services.

TAWAU: Tawau Hospital will continue enhancing its capacity to achieve Category 1 State Hospital status by 2030, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad announced.

The hospital currently offers various clinical specialty services including cardiology, reconstructive plastic surgery, and geriatrics.

“The Health Ministry will ensure the addition of critical human resources from time to time to enable more efficient and safer medical services,” he said during the new block launch officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Dzulkefly described the new block as a significant achievement in strengthening Sabah’s health system, particularly for east coast communities.

“Tawau is a strategic area that plays an important role in supporting healthcare services for surrounding districts such as Semporna, Kunak, and Lahad Datu,” he stated.

The new block establishment increases treatment capacity while ensuring rural communities have better healthcare access.

This RM223.65 million project under the 11th Malaysia Plan was completed by the MADANI Government, demonstrating commitment to delayed projects.

The investment adds 154 new beds, bringing Tawau Hospital’s total official capacity to 585 beds.

The Prime Minister’s presence reflects the government’s commitment to equitable national development in healthcare.

“This is the meaning of outcome-based governance, where every Ringgit spent delivers tangible benefits to the people’s well-being,” Dzulkefly added. – Bernama
