Belgium investigates synagogue blast as mayor condemns antisemitic act

Belgian prosecutors launch a probe into a blast at a synagogue in Liège, with the mayor condemning the targeted antisemitic act that caused material damage.

LIÈGE: Belgian federal prosecutors specialising in organised crime and terrorism will investigate an explosion that damaged a synagogue.

The early morning blast caused no injuries but blew out windows in buildings across the road, according to a police spokesman.

Mayor Willy Demeyer strongly condemned what he called an intentional and targeted antisemitic act.

“We cannot allow foreign conflicts to be imported into our city,” Demeyer told public broadcaster RTBF.

The explosion occurred around 4:00 am in front of the synagogue in the eastern city of Liège.

Authorities erected a security perimeter, with federal police expected at the scene.

The historic synagogue, built in 1899, also functions as a museum for the local Jewish community.
