Spotify expands into music videos for premium users in the US and Canada, challenging YouTube’s long-standing video streaming dominance
NEW YORK: Spotify will introduce music videos for paying subscribers in the United States and Canada in the coming weeks.
A company spokesperson confirmed the expansion on Wednesday, marking a significant move beyond its current video podcast offerings.
Over 390 million users have already watched a video podcast on the audio streaming platform.
“We’ll have more details to share soon,” the Spotify spokesperson added.
The spokesperson noted that previous music video announcements in other markets specified access for Premium users only.
Once available, subscribers will be able to switch seamlessly between audio-only and video modes.
This move positions Spotify to compete directly with YouTube, which has dominated music video streaming for nearly 20 years. – AFP
