Mid-tier companies record RM39.5 billion in sales for 2024

Malaysia’s Mid-Tier Companies Development Programme achieved RM39.5 billion in 2024 sales, with 60% from exports and expansion into 115 new markets.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Mid-Tier Companies Development Programme (MTCDP) recorded RM39.5 billion in annual sales for 2024, a 20% increase from the previous year.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz announced this milestone at the 2025 Mid-Tier Companies Chief Executive Officers Summit.

He revealed that nearly 60% of the total sales were derived from exports.

“This milestone also contributed to Malaysia’s position as the 24th largest trading nation in the world,” he stated in his keynote address.

According to the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, 394 companies have benefited from the MTCDP since its establishment from 2014 to 2025.

MTCDP alumni successfully penetrated 115 new international markets by 2024, representing a 49% year-on-year increase.

“Besides ASEAN and Asia, MTCs are also entering the Middle Eastern, African and European markets,” Tengku Zafrul added.

The programme generated 6,408 new job opportunities in 2024, up 20% from 5,339 positions created in 2023.

Of these new positions, 68.5% were highly skilled roles while the remainder were semi-skilled positions.

More than 11,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises were integrated into the MTC export supply chain as of last year, marking a 10% year-on-year increase.

The minister emphasised that sustainability practices, branding and digitalisation adaptation strengthened MTCs’ international market position.

He noted that despite representing only about 1% of total registered companies, MTCs contributed 40% to Malaysia’s gross domestic product in 2023.

MATRADE chief executive officer Datuk Seri Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz said the programme has empowered Malaysian companies to expand beyond perceived limits since 2014.

“We have also witnessed a significant rise in branding and visibility, with more companies establishing a confident presence in the international marketplace,” he said in his welcoming remarks.

The summit convened over 300 chief executive officers from the MTCDP alumni network alongside key industry stakeholders.

Titled “Forging ASEAN’s Next Chapter: Malaysian Mid-Tier Companies Driving Resilient and Inclusive Growth,” the event aimed to strengthen regional business connectivity and collaboration. – Bernama
