Geologists will investigate the cause of Cameron Highlands flash floods and recommend prevention measures, with no casualties reported from the incident.

PETALING JAYA: The Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES) will deploy geologists to Cameron Highlands to conduct studies and provide technical assistance following the flash floods incident in the area yesterday.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup (pic) said the ministry would work with several agencies, including the Public Works Department (JKR), the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) and local authorities (PBT), to determine the cause of the incident and identify measures to prevent a recurrence.

“We are aware of the news that this incident happened last night. This effort requires cooperation between several ministries and agencies.

“For our part, we will send our geologists to conduct studies and provide technical assistance, and will issue a report after all studies are completed on what exactly happened and how we can avoid this in the future,” he told reporters after attending the opening of the Climate Change and Sustainability Conference 2026 here today.

Yesterday, continuous heavy rain lasting more than two hours triggered flash floods in the Habu Heights area in Cameron Highlands, Pahang.

Cameron Highlands police chief Superintendent Azri Ramli said the heavy downpour, which began at 2 pm, caused muddy water from hilly areas to surge onto the Ringlet main road, resulting in flash floods.

He said no casualties were reported, although two police reports were lodged involving vehicles moved by strong currents.
