A Kuching mother appeals for the driver who caused her son’s amputation to come forward, as police continue their investigation into the March hit-and-run

KUCHING: A mother is pleading for the driver involved in a hit-and-run incident that led to her son’s leg being amputated to come forward.

Afidah Suhaili, 68, said her family harbours no resentment and only hopes the individual will take responsibility for the late March incident.

“We are not seeking revenge, only hoping the person will come forward and take responsibility so the matter can be resolved properly,” she told reporters.

She confirmed there is CCTV footage showing the driver exiting the vehicle before driving away from the scene on Jalan Bako.

The footage did not clearly capture the vehicle’s registration number.

Afidah also urged anyone with additional CCTV or dashcam footage to assist police.

Her son, 24-year-old food delivery rider Putra Aqmal Syukrie Sabli, was travelling from Jalan Song to Stutong when the accident occurred on March 30.

He stated that a vehicle, believed to be a Toyota Avanza, suddenly turned into a junction.

“I tried to avoid the vehicle but my left leg brushed against the side of the car, causing me to fall,” he explained.

He remained conscious at the scene, shouting for help and waiting about an hour for an ambulance to arrive.

Afidah said although her son’s leg was not severed at the scene, he waited nearly 15 hours for surgery.

Doctors initially attempted to save the limb but later decided amputation was necessary to save his life.

Putra Aqmal, a former tahfiz student and acting imam, said he is coming to terms with his new reality.

“Allah has not taken my life, only my leg,” he stated.

He previously earned about RM2,000 monthly as a delivery rider and also taught Quranic recitation.

Afidah said her son is undergoing follow-up treatment and rehabilitation.

He is expected to receive assistance for a prosthetic leg worth RM50,000 in the coming months.

The family is submitting assistance forms to the Social Welfare Department and has received contributions from the public.

Monthly expenses for medication and other needs are estimated at around RM1,000.

Kuching Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed the case is being investigated for reckless and dangerous driving.

“No police report has been lodged by the driver involved to date, and no witnesses have come forward so far,” he said.

Members of the public wishing to assist the family can channel contributions to a specified CIMB Bank account under his sister’s name.
