Malaysia’s government outlines three key commitments to achieve its 2030 Reading Nation goal, focusing on libraries, digitalisation and the publishing industry.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is confident it can achieve its aspiration of becoming a Reading Nation by 2030 through continuous efforts and support from all parties.
Minister of National Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang outlined the government’s three main commitments to mark World Book and Copyright Day. The first is empowering rural and community libraries as hubs for knowledge, social interaction and local development.
The second commitment involves accelerating the digitalisation of libraries to align with technological developments and the needs of the current generation. The third is strengthening the country’s book and publishing industry by supporting the ecosystem of writing, publishing and distribution of quality reading materials.
Aaron stated that the National Library of Malaysia, an agency under his ministry, is the lead agency in promoting a reading culture. He concluded his message by quoting the philosopher Plato on the power of books.
