Military officer arrested after suspected drunk driving crash on MEX kills one and injures four others in Kuala Lumpur
PETALING JAYA: A 31-year-old military officer has been detained on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol following a fatal crash on the Maju Expressway (MEX) early this morning.
The collision claimed the life of a 22-year-old Bangladeshi man and left four others injured, including the suspect, New Straits Times reported.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said a breathalyser test conducted on the driver of a Ford Fiesta showed alcohol levels above the legal limit.
“The driver has been arrested, and the case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence and causing death,” he said, adding that the offence carries a maximum jail term of 15 years and a fine of up to RM100,000.
The incident occurred at about 5.38am at Km1.9 of the expressway, along the stretch from Salak Selatan towards Jalan Tun Razak.
The suspect is believed to have veered into the opposite lane before colliding with a Perodua Alza operating as an e-hailing vehicle.
The e-hailing car was transporting two Bangladeshi passengers from Kuala Lumpur International Airport at the time. The victim, who was seated in the middle row, suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 20-year-old female passenger sustained injuries and is receiving treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital. The e-hailing driver also suffered head injuries, while a 36-year-old female passenger in the Ford Fiesta was hurt. The suspect sustained minor injuries.
Police confirmed that a drug test on the suspect returned negative, and investigations are ongoing, including efforts to obtain CCTV footage from the scene.
