This decision was finalised after taking into account the implications of pig farming, which can cause pollution to the soil, air and also river water sources through the release of pig faeces and sewage.

PETALING JAYA: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has reiterated His Royal Highness’ firm stance against any pig farming activities in any district across the state.

In a statement today, His Majesty said the position was consistent with His Royal Highness’ earlier statement issued on Feb 10, stressing that no pig farming activities should be carried out in Selangor.

“His Majesty said the decision was made after considering the implications of pig farming, including land and air pollution as well as the risk of river water contamination through the discharge of pig waste and sewage,” it said.

The statement was issued by Selangor private secretary Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani.

His Majesty also expressed concern that such activities could affect water catchment areas and rivers that supply clean water to about nine million residents in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

The Sultan further stressed that modern pig farming methods that comply with standards would involve extremely high costs and would not be practical to implement solely to meet pork supply demands in Selangor.

“As such, His Majesty proposed that pork be imported from other states, such as Sarawak, to meet the needs of non-Muslim communities in the state. Even countries such as Singapore do not rear pigs and instead import pork from external sources.”

The Sultan also viewed both large-scale and small-scale pig farming as unsuitable for Selangor due to the state’s limited land availability and high property values, which should instead be utilised for more economically beneficial development.

In this regard, His Majesty stressed that the issue of pig farming should be brought to a complete end (“full stop”) to avoid public unease and to preserve peace and harmony in Selangor.
