An e-hailing driver involved in a fatal MEX highway crash qualifies for Perkeso payouts under the new Gig Workers Act 2025.

KUALA LUMPUR: An e-hailing driver involved in the fatal accident involving Bangladeshi nationals on the Maju Expressway (MEX) on April 23 is eligible to receive several benefits from the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO).

In a statement today, PERKESO said although the Self-Employment Social Security Protection Scheme (LINDUNG Kendiri) contribution of the driver, Jailani Sapiih, 41, had expired before the incident, he is still protected under the Gig Workers Act 2025 (Act 872) as he was on e-hailing duties when the accident occurred.

PERKESO Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed said Act 872, which came into force on March 31, provides protection for every gig worker through a platform transaction-based contribution mechanism.

“In this case, PERKESO has processed the Temporary Disablement Benefit (FHUS) based on 41 days of medical leave from April 23 to June 2 this year, amounting to RM1,230.

“In addition, rehabilitation equipment assistance, including a wheelchair, has also been provided through the LINDUNG Kendiri Scheme to support the victim’s daily recovery process following injuries to the head, legs and chest,” he said in the statement.

Mohammed Azman said the protection reflects the core principle of social security under Act 872, as its main objective is to safeguard lives and provide income replacement in the event of work-related misfortune.

Meanwhile, he said gig service platform providers are required to complete two key processes of system integration with PERKESO, namely registering workers’ information and implementing automatic contributions at a rate of 1.25%.

He said as of yesterday, seven gig service platform providers had completed the registration process, involving AirAsia Ride Sdn Bhd, Kiddocare, Eternal Meteor Sdn Bhd (GoGet), ShopeeFood Malaysia, Troopers Innovation Sdn Bhd, Fastgig Sdn Bhd, and Delivery Hero Malaysia (Foodpanda) Sdn Bhd.

“Only Fastgig Sdn Bhd has completed both processes, enabling gig workers on the platform to begin contributing to PERKESO automatically,” he said.
